Faculty & Staff Advisors
Main Points for Advisors
The National Student Exchange is a partnership among nearly 200 institutions in the U.S., U.S. territories (Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Guam) and Canada. All students apply for the program by completing an NSE application through the Office of the Provost & Executive Vice President. The application fee is $150.
The application for the National Student Exchange Program is February 15 for the upcoming Fall/Spring semester for priority placements. After priority placements, there are ways a student can directly be placed to a school depending on availability. They must meet with the NSE Coordinator, Lisa Stricklin, at the Provost Office in either case.

Students choose NSE for many reasons – to enhance an academic program, to experience a university setting outside of Mississippi, to explore possibilities for graduate school or employment opportunities after MSU. Since students are enrolled in MSU during this program, most of their scholarships and financial aid should apply but we can check with the Scholarship office for verification. Students will transfer their courses back to MSU after they return and those credits are considered resident credit. Students are allow to go on exchange for 1 semester or up to 1 year. They may also attend up to 2 different institutions.
Outgoing MSU students pay tuition and fees here at MSU and pay lab fees, housing, meals, etc. at their host institution. They are required to get pre-approval on courses they will take at their host institution to make sure they are equivalent or will fulfill their academic needs here. Some students may also take courses at the host institution that will help their future career goals but may not be required for their academic career here. Both are allowed but it may be helpful to remind the student about what may or may not be allowed to fulfill degree completion here.
Our office (NSE Coordinator) would like to work with advisors on helping the student find the appropriate courses and semester that fits in with their academic needs. The NSE Coordinator is the person that can reach out to other institutions regarding obtaining a syllabus or course descriptions if they are not public on the host institution's website.
NSE participating Universities may be found at www.nse.org/exchange/colleges-universities/alpha-location
By giving guidance from on how National Student Exchange can fit into their academic schedule and what academic requirements they might fulfill while on exchange. Students will meet with you to fill out their course equivalency paperwork.
